helical submerged arc welding (HSAW)

A welding process commonly used to join longitudinally welded pipes, that uses a layer of granular flux and is covered, preventing the visibility of the arc. The electrode burns in a gas and vapor filled cavity to create pipes with excellent toughness and versatility.
